The Homer Elks Fishing Tournament Is the Best Event of the Year

Fishing is more than just a sport in Alaska. Especially in Homer, it’s a way of life! The waters that surround our town are the best in the world for halibut fishing, and you catch some large salmon here, too. If you want to compete in a fishing competition, the annual Homer Elks Fishing Tournament is a great way to test your skills as an angler! Each year, fishermen (and women!) from across the Last Frontier gather in our town to participate in this event, formally known as the Homer Elks Winter King Salmon Derby. Read on for all the information you need to participate in or attend this event!

Who Does It Benefit?

Not only is the Homer Elks Winter King Salmon Derby fun, but it also benefits a good cause! Proceeds from entry benefit the Homer Elks Lodge Youth, Veterans, and Community Charities Programs. The entry fee for the weekend-long event is $100, which allows you to fish one of both days. This price does not include a fishing charter or equipment. Please remember that all participants must have an Alaska fishing license and King Salmon stamp.

Prize Payouts

There are five chances to win at the Homer Elks Winter King Salmon Derby! For first place, the angler with the largest salmon wins 20 percent of gross ticket sales. Second and third place win 15 and 10 percent of gross ticket sales, respectively, and there’s also a $100 prize for the top female angler and top non-motorized angler. While the cash prizes are nice, it’s just the cherry on top of a fun weekend!
